On Sunday, September 26, 2010, the Newton-Wellesley Hospital Charitable Foundation will host its first annual HopeWalks event to benefit the Integrative Support Services offered at the Vernon Cancer Center. These life-enhancing services help cancer patients through treatment while optimizing healing and comfort, and Newton-Wellesley Hospital wants to make these services available to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

The 3.5 mile route will start and end at the hospital, and all ages are welcome. Send a strong message of HOPE to the community by becoming a corporate sponsor and/or hosting a team of walkers. Click on link below for more information or contact Haillie MacNeill at 617-243-5491 or hopewalks@partners.org.

  • Sales Tax Holiday Weekend
    August14-15
  • Legislation designating Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15 as a Sales Tax Holiday weekend was passed by the Legislature and is now on the desk of Governor Deval Patrick, awaiting his signature, which is all but assured.

During the holiday weekend, no sales tax will be charged on purchases that meet the following criteria:

    • Purchases must be for personal (non-business) use
    • Single item prices must be less than $2,500
    • Purchases must be made on either August 14 or August 15, 2010
Prior sales, layaway sales, and sales of telecommunications services, tobacco products, gas, steam, electricity, motor vehicles, mototboats, meals, and items priced over $2,500 are exempt from the holiday and remain subject to the sales tax. Alcohol, newly subject to the sales tax just last year, was not included on the exempt list and thus will qualify for tax free status on the holiday weekend.

For more info, contact Retailers Association of Massachusetts at 617-523-1900 or click on link below.

  • Wellesley Police Department
    NIXLE Service
  • The Wellesley Police Department has partnered with Nixle www.nixle.com to bring community notifications to a new level. The system, which is free, allows citizens to sign up for notifications from the Wellesley Police Department. Users then decide what type and how many notifications they will receive. Users can also specify whether they receive the alerts via their text capable cell phone, email, website, or all three.

This is a great way to stay informed about what is going on in the Wellesley community, whether you are at home or away. The Wellesley Police Department is very committed to this service and strive to make accurate, fast notifications to citizens.

Here is a breakdown of what the Wellesley Police will be sending via this service:

ALERT ADVISORY: This is the highest level of community notification and will be reserved for very important events. Such notifications will include significant crimes of violence, bank robberies, bomb incidents, mass evacuations, missing children and major fires.

ADVISORIES: This is the second level of community notification. Items that will be sent include serious accidents, property crimes (break ins), vehicle and suspect descriptions, and other minor events that the Wellesley Police is involved in.

TRAFFIC: This is the lowest level of community notification and will include planned street closures, traffic updates around town, expected delays due to construction, and other traffic related matters.

COMMUNITY: This notification is reserved for Wellesley Police non-breaking news, non-emergency type notifications that may be of interest to the Wellesley community.
