  • Mass SaveŽ
    Energy Efficiency Campaign
  • Mass Save and Red Sox Radio Network have joined forces in a groundbreaking effort to spur energy savings across the Commonwealth with energy efficiency incentives, information, discounts on products and programs. Beginning on April 22, 2010, Massachusetts businesses and residential customers can get in on the game and win big by sharing their energy savings stories.

The partnership with Red Sox Radio Network is part of a larger social marketing effort to get consumers to take advantage of new opportunities in energy efficiency. For businesses, homeowners and renters energy efficiency means cost savings from reduced energy use, at the same time that it results in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, healthier communities and even job creation. That's the message of Mass Save, a first-of-its-kind, "energy efficiency call-to- action" campaign by a consortium of Massachusetts' utilities, energy efficiency service providers and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER).

Mass Save represents a statewide coordinated effort to achieve energy savings through innovative programs for electric and natural gas customers. The aggressive three year goal of Mass Save is to ultimately net $4 billion in savings for participating customers. The plan also calls for a savings of close to 2.5 million mega-watt hours of electricity and 45 million therms of natural gas over the three year period. The corresponding reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would be equivalent to the emissions of nearly 40% of the vehicles in Massachusetts.

Sponsors of Mass Save include Bay State Gas, Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, National Grid, New England Gas Company, NSTAR, Unitil, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company, in partnership DOER.

Beginning in April and running through the World Series, Mass Save will target all regions of the state offering consumers the chance to win tickets to Red Sox games, recognition as MassSavers at Fenway Park and on-air mention by Red Sox Radio Network's, Joe Castiglione. Mass Save will be gathering stories through submissions by residential and business customers on MassSave.com/playball describing how they have taken charge of their energy use through the Mass Save programs. Selected Mass Save ticket winners may be featured in the media. MassSavers will also have the opportunity to become "ambassadors" and join Wally, the Red Sox mascot as he takes the energy efficiency message out of Fenway and into the community at business association meetings, chambers of commerce events, festivals and fairs.

Business customers will also be eligible for Mass Save honors by taking actions such as having an energy audit, conducting a lighting or equipment motor retrofit, or improving heating and water heating applications. Business customers can improve their bottom line and be nominated for a MassSavers Business or Industry Partner Award. Selected businesses will be recognized for their accomplishments at an exclusive event at Fenway Park and may have the chance to share their story on the radio with WEEI's Joe Castiglione and Dave O'Brien. MassSaver businesses will also have access to materials and tools to help promote the Mass Save program in their communities. Interested industry partners, commercial/industrial and large businesses should contact their utility or energy efficiency service provider Account Representatives or their local energy provider to learn how they can participate in the Mass Save business awards.

For details on energy efficiency programs and incentives your business may be eligible for, click on the link below.

Mass Save is a public-private partnership of the Commonwealth's energy efficiency program administrators (Bay State Gas, Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, National Grid, New England Gas Company, NSTAR, Unitil, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company) and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER). Designed to provide a wide range of services, incentives, trainings, and information promoting energy efficiency, this statewide partnership helps residents and businesses manage energy costs.

  • Wellesley Police Department
    NIXLE Service
  • The Wellesley Police Department has partnered with Nixle www.nixle.com to bring community notifications to a new level. The system, which is free, allows citizens to sign up for notifications from the Wellesley Police Department. Users then decide what type and how many notifications they will receive. Users can also specify whether they receive the alerts via their text capable cell phone, email, website, or all three.

This is a great way to stay informed about what is going on in the Wellesley community, whether you are at home or away. The Wellesley Police Department is very committed to this service and strive to make accurate, fast notifications to citizens.

Here is a breakdown of what the Wellesley Police will be sending via this service:

ALERT ADVISORY: This is the highest level of community notification and will be reserved for very important events. Such notifications will include significant crimes of violence, bank robberies, bomb incidents, mass evacuations, missing children and major fires.

ADVISORIES: This is the second level of community notification. Items that will be sent include serious accidents, property crimes (break ins), vehicle and suspect descriptions, and other minor events that the Wellesley Police is involved in.

TRAFFIC: This is the lowest level of community notification and will include planned street closures, traffic updates around town, expected delays due to construction, and other traffic related matters.

COMMUNITY: This notification is reserved for Wellesley Police non-breaking news, non-emergency type notifications that may be of interest to the Wellesley community.

For more information about NIXLE and detailed instructions on how to sign up, click on the WPD link below. Then go to the PUBLIC INFORMATION webpage.

  • MA Environmental Trust
    Themed License Plates
  • The Massachusetts Environmental Trust is a grant making entity supported by the sales of environment themed license plates - the Right Whale, the Brook Trout, and the Blackstone Valley Mill. Over 40,000 drivers display these plates and contribute nearly $1,000,000 to environmental projects each year.

Since 1988, the Trust has awarded over $18 million through nearly 650 grants to organizations which have in turn made a remarkable impact on protecting and enhancing the state's water resources. Grants have been used to: find sources of pollution, restore marine and freshwater habitat, protect endangered species, monitor water quality throughout the state, educate students on environmental issues, and much more.

Many businesses can participate in this effort by simply purchasing a license plate for their vehicles.

If vehicles are (1) registered in Massachusetts; and (2) passenger vehicles with "passenger" rather than "commercial" registration plates, they can display the Massachusetts Environmental Trust plates and make a tax-deductible contribution each time they register or renew.

It is easy and inexpensive to "green" a business, display commitment to the community, improve the Massachusetts environment.

With some 50,000 M.E.T. plates on the road today, the plates are popular and easily recognizable. Because the Trust is governed and advised by leading environmental professionals and scientists, you can feel comfortable that your donation will go to the most effective and accountable programs.

The cost of an environmental specialty plate is just $40. At initial purchase, $28 is a tax deductible contribution that goes directly to the Massachusetts Environmental Trust to support environmental programs/projects with a focus on water and water- related issues. Renew the plate every two years and the entire $40 dollars goes to the Trust and is tax deductible. (This is in addition to the standard $50 registration fee the Registry of Motor Vehicles collects at the time of renewal.)

Selecting a MET plate rather than a standard plate couldn't be easier. Simply select the plate of your choice when registering the vehicle. The RMV will send your donation to the Trust. To renew your contribution, just renew your plate when notified by the registry.

To purchase an environmental license plate, go to www.mass.gov/rmv and select "order special plates".
